How to achieve Business Sustainability

Corporate sustainability refers to the efforts a company makes to sustain its economic activity, considering social and environmental factors, and making its management a responsible action with resources.

What are the five principles that any company must follow if it aspires to achieve business sustainability?

1. Business integrityAny company that wishes to be sustainable must operate with integrity, respecting fundamental responsibilities in the areas of human rights, employment, environment and anti-corruption.
2. Strengthening societyCompanies develop actions to support communities in their needs or to help them with the problems that surround them.
3. Leadership commitmentCompany leaders must send a strong signal to the entire organization that sustainability is important and that every responsibility counts.
4. Progress reportsReporting on performance to stakeholders in a transparent and public manner is fundamental for companies committed to sustainability.
5. Local actionCompanies with operations and supply chains that span the globe need to understand each location, wherever it may be, regardless of headquarters, and therefore must have a perspective on sustainability through a local lens.

How to achieve business sustainability?

In this sense, organizational culture plays a key role in establishing internal practices on the efficient use of resources, considering all the variables mentioned above.

The company must take into account the value chain (inputs, processes, and outputs). It must also consider the constant evaluation of actions that involve resource expenditures in order to improve and manage them better, thereby maximizing efficiency and, consequently, the company's profitability.

Another important aspect concerns how corporate sustainability is communicated and how consumers and clients validate that communication. When companies successfully convey their actions toward greater sustainability, consumers can question, accept, and/or support them.

In short, developing a sustainable business is no easy task. It requires willpower, talent in business management, and a broad and deep understanding of the environment, allowing one to identify the elements that must be carefully considered during the production process.
