Taking care of the workspaces

Safety and health management is an integral part of business management. Companies must conduct risk assessments to identify hazards and risks in their workplaces and implement measures to effectively control them, ensuring that these hazards and risks do not cause harm to workers.

The International Labour Organization has published guidelines on the development of occupational safety and health management systems.

These guidelines were conceived as a practical tool to help the organizations (whether they are businesses, companies, establishments, institutions or associations, or a part of them, public or private, declared or not… that have management and functions), and the competent institutions to continuously improve the effectiveness of OSH. 

Occupational safety and health, including compliance with occupational safety and health (OSH) requirements under national legislation, is the responsibility and duty of the employer. The employer should demonstrate strong leadership and commitment to OSH activities in the workplace. Company, and adopt the necessary provisions for the establishment of an OSH management system that includes the main elements of policy, organization, planning and implementation, evaluation and action for improvement, as shown in the graphic.

The perception of increased risks associated with the impact of Covid-19 can be seen when evaluating how challenging work was before and during the pandemic:

Prior to March 2020, the 72,80 % It used to value the risks as positively challenging, but from last year that assessment decreased considerably to 58,24%. 

Conversely, the negative perception increased from 14,45 % al 32,18%, doubling.

When asked about the security areas that companies plan to focus on in the short term, the preferences were as follows:

  • Involving employees in safety (+70%)
  • Conduct risk assessments (+60%)
  • Managing hazardous substances (+30%)
  • Ensure the company's legal compliance (+30%)
  • Execute audit programs (+30%)
  • Implement EHS software or an app (+20%)
  • Implement Safety II/ Safety Differently practices (+10%)
